TUESDAY NOVEMBER 8

BODY FOUND

Momence officials discovered the body of a woman in her apartment in the 300 block of East Washington Monday.  Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner says foul play is not suspected an autopsy will be conducted today to try and determine the cause of death.   She’s identified as 26 year old Susan Nelson. 

BOGUS BILL

A donut shop in the 300 block of West Court Street apparently, unwittingly, passed along a counterfeit bill Monday.   The victim says he got the bogus five dollar bill as change.   The man says notice the ink on the bill was smearing.  He says he took it home and attempted to wash the bill and it ended up falling apart.

MAN SENTENCED

A Bradley man has been sentenced to two and a half years in federal prison after pleading guilty in federal court to the possession of a machine gun and 20 other unregistered firearms.  Officials in Urbana say Gerald Carney Jr also admitted to a failed attempt to convert numerous firearms into fully automatic weapons.

KMEG ARREST

KMEG agents last week executed a search warrant at a home in the 1000 block of North Chicago Ave Kankakee and came away with three baggies of crack cocaine and a small amount of marijuana.   Arrested on drug charges was 28 year old Kijafi Mobley of Kankakee.

STEGER MAN

A Steger man is being held on five million dollars bond after allegedly duct taping two women to chairs, stuffing socks in their mouths and threatening to cut off their toes.  The Will County states attorneys office says in the herald news that 31 year old Porche Williams also beat the women with the butt of a semi automatic weapon while holding the two for several hours Thursday at a Beecher apartment.  Both women were released early Friday morning.  The women tell prosecutors that Williams believed they knew the wear abouts of his missing safe containing a large amount of heroin.

BOURBONNAIS MEETING

Last nights Bourbonnais Village Board meeting was postponed until tomorrow night because of Fridays death of Bourbonnais Police Officer Justin Honeycutt.   Visitation for Honeycutt was held last night funeral services are today.  Bourbonnais Village Hall will be closed today.  

ELECTION DAY

It’s Election Day in Indiana.  In Rensselaer, Mayor Herb Arihood is facing democrat and former Mayor Steve Wood.  Wood sat in the mayors chair from 1992 to 1996 and says he’s favor of growth as is the current administration, but wood says not at the expense of city needs.

GIVE BACK TUESDAY

Its give back Tuesday at Ruby Tuesdays in Bradley.  Tonight from 4-9 Ruby Tuesdays will donate 20 percent of your bill to the local united way.   Just tell your server that you're at the restaurant to help the United Way.  Ruby Tuesdays is located in Northfield Sq Mall.

KANKAKEE MEETING

At last nights Kankakee City Council meeting the city council appointed an new adjudication judge.     Kimberley Donald will be taking over that role.   Also last night it was announced that IDOT will be resurfacing Court Street next year.   It’s a 2.6 million dollar project.

GOODLAND WATER TOWER

In Goodland Indiana towns water tower collapsed about 11 last night.  Goodland officials report that the town is completely without water.  It’s not yet clear what caused the tower to fall.  No one reported hurt.  The town is receiving water bottle donations from nearby Kentland for now.
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 9

STABBING

We have an ID today on a Kankakee man who allegedly stabbed his wife in the neck.  It happened Tuesday night at the couples home in the 300 block of South Fourth Ave.  Charged with aggravated domestic battery is 52 year old Farron Fielder of Kankakee.  No word on the condition of his wife.

GOODLAND WATER

Its not clear today just how long Goodland Indiana will be without water service.   The towns water tower collapsed late Monday night leaving about a 1000 people without tap or toilet water.  Officials are still investigating the cause and say a new one will have to be built.  For now water is being provided in bottles from Kentland. 

COUNTY CASH

Help to the tune of up to 50,000 dollars is on its way to the City of Kankakee.  At Tuesdays Kankakee County Board meeting, the board voted to provide monetary support for Kankakee’s legal fight against the RTA, Chicago and a number of suburban communities who are suing over the citys tax sharing program.    The county benefits from the program as well.  Board president Mike Bossert says it could be a long fight.

HENRICHS PAYS UP

Convicted former Iroquois County Clerk Mark Henrichs of rural Buckley fulfilled a requirement of his 30 month probation sentence Monday when he presented the county with a check for 17,500 dollars.  The money was restitution for cheating the county in a deal to buy a travel trailer to be used as a mobile voting facility.   It was later learned that Henrichs inflated the price and failed to disclose the fact that he was the trailers owner. 

CLOONEN

Local business woman Kate Cloonen has been chosen by democratic leaders in Kankakee, Grundy and Will Counties as a consensus candidate for the 79th legislative district seat now held by Lisa Dugan.  Cloonen is the owner of JK Steel Erectors.  Cloonon says if she could spend a few minutes with Governor Pat Quinn she would tell him to help the economy lighten up on business.  Dugan is stepping down at the end of her current term.   Two other possible democratic candidates have backed off a run.  Cloonen has the support of outgoing representative Dugan.

TEACHER AID DEATH

Its been a rough week for students and staff at Momence Consolidated Unit School District 1.   First losing a 6th grader to a weekend home fire and now the Daily Journal reports that a woman found dead Monday in her Momence apartment was a teachers aid at Jeneir Elementary.  An autopsy was to be conducted on 26 year old Suzanne Nelson Monday.  We’re still awaiting results.   Officials say foul play is not suspected in nelsons death. 
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 10

ACCIDENT

There was a single vehicle accident in Iroquois County Wednesday on 1900 North and Route 49.  Police say due to a medical condition, 43 year old Edward Wallace of crescent city, passed out behind the wheel.    Wallaces vehicle left the roadway and entered a ditch where it  struck a culvert.  Wallace was taken to Iroquois Memorial for treatment.  No word on how serious those injuries were.

FUNERAL

Funeral services for 12 year old Willie Ayala of Momence are scheduled for today at St Patricks Catholic Church in Momence.  Ayala died when fire struck his four story home last weekend.   Internment will be in Mexico.

CARS KEYED

City police today are looking for whoever it was that keyed a number of vehicles at a used.car dealership in the 1200 block of North Hobbie.    The owner tells police, in all, 11 vehicles were damaged Tuesday night.

MAC DINNER

Reservations are now being accepted for this years annual thanksgiving day dinner with all the trimmings at Bishop McNamara High School.    The dinner is free and can be delivered if necessary.  Reservations are required call 933-7620 by November 18th .     Spokesperson Joanne Bracken says they could also use a few more volunteers.   To volunteer call that same number 933-7620.

MORE FUNNEY MONEY

More funny money has turned up in Kankakee.   Police say someone passed a counterfeit 5 dollar bill at a business in the 2100 block of West Station Street Tuesday. 
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11

VETERANS DAY

Taps was played today at Small Memorial Park in Kankakee; part of a Veterans Day ceremony sponsored by the Veterans Commission.  Lisa Dugan was one of those speaking today and says don’t wait for Veterans Day to thank a Veteran for his service.

KOREAN WAR VETS

Some Manteno Korean War Vets are getting a special honor on this Veterans Day.  Defense Dept. officials will visit Veterans homes today in Manteno were members of the Korean commemoration committee will present certifications of appreciation signed by the Defense Secretary.

RIBBON CUTTING

Some 200 people were on hand Thursday for the grand opening and ribbon cutting ceremony at the new Kankakee County Veterans Clinic and Latham Dr. in Bourbonnais.  Those addressing the crowd were Hines VA Hospital Director Sharon Helman. 

ASSAULT ARREST

Gilman Police have arrested a man on a charge of predatory criminal sexual assault.  34 year old Robert Martinez of Gilman was taken into custody Thursday afternoon.   No details are yet available.

ANOTHER ARREST

A man wanted out of Mississippi on a charge of aggravated assault was arrested in Watseka on Thursday.  The 47 year old is being held at the Iroquois County Detention Center and waiting extradition back to Pearl River.

COPPER THEIVES

Several homes have been the victim of copper thieves in the last couple of days.  City police say a man in the 1900 block of W. Hickory said someone had kicked in his front door and took off with copper piping.  A home in the 200 block of S. Nelson  also had their pipes stolen.
MONDAY NOVEMBER 14

DOUBLE FATAL

A weekend accident in Benton County Indiana between a fuel tanker truck and a grain truck claimed the lives of both drivers.   Police say the tanker truck driver failed to yield to at the intersection of State Roads 71 and 18 Saturday morning. The grain truck was t-boned by the tanker before both vehicles caught fire.  Neither driver has been identified.

KANKAKEE WOMAN KILLED

A Kankakee woman was struck by a train Saturday night in Kankakee in what looks to be a suicide.   Kankakee County Coroner Bob Gessner tells the Daily Journal that 49 year old Yvette Hubert apparently just laid down on the Canadian National tracks that run parallel to Southeast Ave near the river and waited for a train to come by.

METH SENTENCE

A Bourbonnais man has been sentenced to 4 and a half years in prison after being found guilty in Kankakee County Court in August for the manufacture of methamphetamine.   29 year old Justin Schmidt was initially charged with making some 5000 grams of meth at his Tri-Star Estates mobile home in the summer of 2010, but state lab tests later knocked that down to only 500 grams.

HOTEL EVACUATED

A carbon monoxide leak is being blamed for sending 16 people to the hospital and forcing the evacuation of some 300 guests from the Holiday Inn Express in Bradley Saturday night.  Bradley Fire saying none of the victims appeared to have life threatening symptoms.  A faulty heater in the swimming pool area is believed to be the cause.

DUGAN TOYS

Again this year State Representative Lisa Dugan is partnering with the Salvation Army and the Toys for Tots program in distributing toys to needy boys and girls this Christmas.  Dugan says families who wish to take part, need to register their kids this week at the Salvation Army in Kankakee.  Registration will also take place Sunday from 11 am until 5 at the Kankakee VFW on West Jeffery.

HOWARD RUNS

John Howard, president of the Pembroke Township Business Alliance has announced that he running for a seat on the Kankakee County Board.    We caught up with Howard at Fridays 4th annual Veterans Day Breakfast in Hopkins Park.

RETIREMENT

After 30 years of repairing, rebuilding and plowing county highways county high way engineer Jim Piekarczyk has announced his retirement.   Piekarczyk says family duties call.  Piekarczyks last day on the job will be November 30th.    No replacement has yet been named.

SLIDER AND A BUTT

A DeMotte Indiana man is lucky to be alive today after his vehicle clipped the rear tires of a semi on i65 near Lowell Indiana early Saturday.  The resulting rollover accident ended with 39 year old Paul Eger being treated on the scene by a passing nurse for a severed artery in his right wrist.  Indiana State Police say dui charges are pending.  Eger apparently wasn't in too much pain. While he was being treated, police say he requested a White Castle hamburger and a cigarette.
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 15

KMEG ARRESTS

KMEG agents have been busy the past few days.  Saturday agents arrested 22 year old Delaney Johnson of Kankakee following an undercover investigation during which Johnson allegedly delivered 1.7 grams of suspected crack cocaine to the 400 block of South Schuyler in Bradley.

POLICE ON ALERT

A man who attempted to lure a student into his van last Thursday in Bourbonnais by telling the youngster that the bus was late and he would drive them to school, apparent tried to lure another student into his van Monday using the same story.  This time in Bradley.   Bradley Police Chief Steve Coy says school and police officials throughout the region are on alert for the guy.  The man is described as a white male driving a gray van.  Mondays attempted to lure a child into the van occurred in Evergreen Acres.

NEAR FIRE

Kankakee Fire fighters were called to an a apartment building the 200 block of North Washington overnight when a neighbor hear a smoke alarm going off in an adjacent apartment.   The occupant apparently left a pan on the stove then fell asleep.   No one was hurt.  There was no damage.  The same scenario is suspected as a possible cause of a Momence house fire two weeks ago that claimed the life of a 12 year old boy. 

BRADLEY MEETING

At last nights Bradley Village Board meeting, trustees tabled for now the controversial rental and multi family unit inspection ordinance.   The program isnt quite ready to roll out.  Again last night landlords were on hand to speak out against the measure that would add a fee to the cost of each rental unit.  Mayor Bruce Adams says the village and landlords want the same thing and this measure will serve both well.

BOGUS BILLS

There’s more funny money going around the area.  A business in the 200 block of North Schuyler Ave in Kankakee found three fake 20 dollar bills in their cash drawers over the weekend.  And employees of a business in the 500 block of South Washington say a kid tried to pass a fake 10 dollar bill there over the weekend, but fled when he was told the bill was no good.

SCHOOL MEMBER DAY

Today is School Board Member Appreciation Day in Illinois.  At Bradley Elementary School District 61, Superintendent Scott Goslin reminds you to give a school board member a pat on the back today.

TOWER COLLAPSE

A week after a water tower collapsed in Goodland Indiana spilling some 300,000 gallons of water on the town, engineers are still trying to determine why the tower fell.   A preliminary inspection last week failed to find anyone one spot on the tower that officials can blame.     Engineers do say it appears the northeast leg of the tower weakened first, but why is still a mystery.  No one was hurt in the collapse.  

XMAS SIGN UPS

At the Salvation Army hundreds of parents turned out Monday morning to sign their kids up to receive toys on Christmas morning from Salvation Army, Toys for Tots and State Rep Lisa Dugans annual toy drive.   Major Jerry O’Neil at the Salvation Army says sign ups absolutely end Friday.  So don’t delay.  Sign up hours at the Salvation Army are today through Thursday from 10 until noon and 1 until 3, Friday until 7 pm.  Toys for Tots will sign up kids Sunday from 11 until 5 at the Kankakee VFW on Jeffery Street.
WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 16

HOME INVASION

Kankakee City Police are looking for two men who forced their way into a home in the 300 block of North Evergreen over the weekend and threatened a woman with a rifle if she didn’t hand over her cash.   The two ended up giving the woman a concussion when one of them struck her in the face with the butt of the rifle.   The two then took her purse and fled.

COMED TRAFFIC JAM

ComEd, stringing wires across I-57 Tuesday afternoon and evening, made of mess of traffic on the expressway causing massive backups.    The lanes were shut down for about 20 minutes at a time every half hour.   More of that is expected today.

DAD PULLS GUN

An argument between a father and son in the 500 block of South Moore Street Monday ended with the arrest of the father when he allegedly pulled out a 357 and pointed the gun at his son.  Police were called to the home and were able to convince Michael Walker Sr to put the weapon.   The 58 year old Walker was charged with aggravated domestic battery.

LANE CLOSURE

The Illinois Department of Transportation has announced that, weather permitting, beams for the new structure carrying I57 over Route 50 will be erected tonight and tomorrow night.  The project will mean lane closures at times.

ENDORSEMENT

At a press conference Tuesday 11 current and former Iroquois County republican officials announced their endorsement for State Representative Jason Barickman for the newly redrawn 53rd state senate seat.   Barickman says he’s the kind of leader the district needs.  Lending his support to Barickman Tuesday was Iroquois County States Attorney Jim Devine. Barickman is up against current State Senator Shane Cultra in the March primary.

NEW BUSES

A $5 million federal grant will allow transit agencies in Kankakee, Champaign-Urbana, Peoria, Galesburg and Rock
Island to buy new hybrid buses.  Up to 10 buses are expected to be delivered in 2013.  The new buses will run on motor fuel and electricity.  They'll replace older buses that used gasoline and diesel.

GOLD COIN

Salvation Army bell ringers haven’t been on the streets for a week yet and already the Kankakee chapter has received its first gold coin.    The lady liberty double eagle was dropped into a kettle at the Kankakee Jewel Tuesday.  The official kettle kickoff fund raising campaign is tomorrow night at ONU. 
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 18

BOGUS BILL

A gas station in the 1900 block of East Court Street summoned city police Thursday after a woman tried to buy a lottery ticket with a phony 10 dollar bill.   The customer was told the bill was no good she then pulled out some real currency to buy the lottery ticket before making her getaway.  

MAN STRIKES AGAIN

A man who has tried to lure children into his van in Bourbonnais and Bradley over the last week or so by saying their school bus had broken down and he was there to take them to school, made a couple of attempts in Kankakee Thursday.  Kankakee City Police says the first took place at 9th and Harbor.   Another, at the bus stop at Harrison and Bourbonnais.  In both cases the man left the area without any children.  The man is described as a white male, 6 feet tall, dark hair with sideburns and a go tee, driving a white or silver full size SUV with window tinting.  Aroma Park Police say they’ve beefed up patrols following a similar attempt there on Tuesday.

METRO NUMBERS

Coming off a record year last year, River Valley Metro continues to break ridership records.   Spokesperson Michelle Brutlag says the numbers look great for the first half of the fiscal year.  Brutlag says they believe the numbers are up for a couple of reasons.  Metro is on course to have more than 900,000 riders this fiscal year.

POT FOUND

A Kankakee Jr High School student is apparently missing his stash today.  Thursday afternoon a jr high bus driver found a plastic baggie containing suspected marijuana on a bus.  The baggie turned over to police.

SACKS RUN

David Sacks, the son of prominent area attorney Leonard Sacks, will reportedly announce a run for the office of Kankakee County Circuit Clerk Monday.   According to the Daily Journal, the 33 year old Sacks lives in Bourbonnais and has a degree in human services from Lynn University. 

SALVATION KICK OFF

At Olivet Nazarene University Thursday night, the Kankakee Salvation Army held the official kickoff to their annual kettle fundraising campaign.    Major Jerry O’Neil says they’ve already gotten their first gold coin of the season dropped in the kettle.  Salvation Army kettles will be on the streets through Christmas Eve.

SOLDIER RETURNS

A Grant Park soldier returns home this weekend after a severe infection left him without the ability to walk and speak.  The Daily Journal reports that 20 year old Army Pfc David Gordon will get a rousing welcome home Saturday morning at Grant Parks Legion Park.   Private Gordon had to endure brain surgery and months of rehab where he learned to walk and speak again.  The infection began as a sinus infection and spread to his brain.  Gordon was stationed in Korea. 

INDICTMENT

A Kankakee County grand jury has indicted a Kankakee man on a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm and unlawful possession of a firearm by a felon after he allegedly shot a man in the back while in the 100 block of South Greenwood in Kankakee on October 6th of this year.     Awaiting trial is 21 year old Fyance Dawson of Kankakee. 

TWILIGHT

They began lining up on Schuyler Ave yesterday afternoon for the midnight showing of the latest Twilight movie.  Twilight Breaking Dawn is at the Paramount Theatre.  In all about 300 people braved the cold last night waiting for the midnight show.   
THURSDAY NOVEMBER 17

TEACHER ARRESTED

A former teacher at Bradley Bourbonnais Community High School is being held on 150,000 bond today on a charge of aggravated criminal sexual assault.  Bradley Police say they arrested 29 year old Alan White of Bourbonnais Tuesday afternoon following an investigation into the alleged assault of a 16 year old BBCH female student over a two year period.  White is a former music teacher at the school.  Police say there does not appear to be any more victims involved.

DONOVAN MAN

A Donovan man who pleaded guilty to possession of 10 pounds of marijuana during a routine traffic stop in South Dakota last August will have to serve just 10 days in prison and four years probation.   The judge Monday gave 37 year old Jonathan Zupkus the benefit of a doubt and a suspended 90 day sentence after Zupkus told the court of his frequent work in schools.  The Rapid City Journal reports Zupkus could have gotten 15 years behind bars.

APARTMENT FIRE

A fire this morning in a two story apartment house in the 700 block of North Indiana in Kankakee, appears to be electrical in nature.  Kankakee Fire saying that no one was hurt in the blaze, however a single mother and her children will need to find shelter elsewhere.  Damage is estimated at about 20,000 dollars.  Its believed the fire began in the attic area of the home.

CAR DEER ACCIDENT

There was a car deer accident in Iroquois County Wednesday.  Police say 56 year old Duane Lade of Watseka was on 2500 East near 2150 North when the animal appeared in the roadway.   There were no injuries.

FILL THE BUS DAY

In conjunction with River Valley Metro, Hidden Cove Sportsplex this radio station, McDonalds and the Kankakee County Soldiers, State Representative Lisa Dugan’s annual Toy Drive is sponsoring a fill the bus with toys event December 3rd at Hidden Cove in Bradley.  Dugan says they hope to collect enough toys to fill a bus and provide a fun family day out at the same time.  Again that’s December 3rd from 11 until 3 at Hidden Cove Sportsplex in Bradley.

GARRETT TRIAL

A tentative trial date of January 5th has been set for accused killer Brian Garrett.   Garrett is charged in the 2009 stabbing deaths of 48 year old Robert Wood and 61 year old Ralph Elsy of Sheldon at the home the two men shared.  Garrett was originally deemed unable to stand trial, but state psychologists have since ruled Garret fit.   Garretts attorney is seeking another opinion.

MORE FUNNY MONEY

A St Anne man was arrested early Wednesday morning after he allegedly tried to get change for a phony 50 dollar bill.  It happened at gas station in the 200 block of East Brookmont Blvd.  Police say 24 year old Kevin Love was still in the store when they arrived.   

PLANT STAYS OPEN

Reynolds Food Packaging has apparently done an about face.   According to the Daily Journal, the Reynolds plant in Grant Park, which had been slated to close putting 98 people out of work, will not only be staying open, but expanding.  Village officials say the expansion could mean an additional 50 jobs at the plant.

TEEN STRUCK

Kankakee County Sheriffs Police say a 14 year old Bradley boy suffered non life threatening injuries after he was struck by a rental car last night about 5:30 near the four way stop on Armour Road in Bourbonnais Township.   The driver, a Chicago man, was not ticketed, but the investigation continues.
MONDAY NOVEMBER 21

BUS FORGER ARRESTED

A Kankakee man has been arrested for allegedly forging River Valley Metro bus passes.  Legitimate passes sell for 30 dollars, but metro officials say in the Daily Journal that the fakes were selling for 5 to 10 dollars each.  Bourbonnais Police identify the forger as 43 year old Kenneth Paterimos of Kankakee.   Metro officials say they've confiscated 15 fake passes so far and believe there are more on the streets.

DUI INDICTMENT

A Kankakee man has been indicted by a county grand jury on a charge of aggravated DUI causing a death, in connection with an October 23rd accident at Route 115 and 2000 South Road that claimed the life 23 year old Jacob Roof of Kankakee.   Roof was a passenger in a vehicle driven by 40 year old Tony Larry of Kankakee.  Larry allegedly blew a stop sign on 2000 South which lead to a collision on 115 with a southbound Kankakee County squad car.  Both the deputy and Larry suffered minor injuries in the accident as well.  Lab test later showed the presence of cannabis in Larry’s system.  Illinois State Police say if convicted, Larry could get 12 years behind bars.

KANKAKEE FIRE

Three people were chased from their home by fire last night in the 1200 block of South 3rd Ave.    Kankakee fire saying the blaze, which began on the second story of the home and appears to be electrical in nature.  No one was hurt.  Damage estimated at about 140 thousand dollars. 

IRO FATAL

A Ludlow woman was killed in a single vehicle accident Sunday in Fountain Creek Township.  Iroquois County Sheriffs Police say 28 year old Christina Merritt of Ludlow was on 200 North near 1900 East when she lost control, drifted off the roadway and rolled the vehicle into a farm field.  Police say Merritt was ejected in the process and was pronounced dead at the scene.

KAMEG ARRESTS

Following a two month investigation, KAMEG agents raided a home in the 300 block of Tedmark Court in Kankakee last week arrested two people and came away with six baggies of heroin packaged for sale.  Taken into custody on drug charges were 33 year old Quantel Riley and 34 year old Nacahya Jones both of Kankakee.

KINZINGER

Congressman Adam Kinzinger made an appearance on ABC's Top Line last Friday.  Kinzinger talked about this weeks deadline for the so called super committee, to come to an agreement on 1.5 trillion in deficit reductions or face automatic spending cuts.  Some that will hit the military hard.  Kinzinger says that would not be good to the country’s national security.

INMATE DIES

No word yet on what caused the death of an inmate at the Livingston County Jail over the weekend.  The still unidentified 50 year old man arrived at the jail Friday night and was placed in an observation holding cell.  According to Livingston County Coroner Michael Burke, the man became unresponsive Saturday morning and was rushed to Saint James in Pontiac where he was pronounced dead.  An ID is pending notification of next of kin.  No word yet on why the man was in custody.

LOWELL WOMAN KILLED

A Lowell woman in her 50’s was killed Sunday night in a two vehicle accident south of Cedar Lake.  The woman was on 141st Ave and pulled onto US 41 where her car was struck by another.   The still unidentified woman was pronounced dead at the scene. Three children her vehicle where all hospitalized with non life threatening injuries.     Three people in the other vehicle were also hospitalized. 

NO ARREST YET

Kankakee City Police have not yet made an arrest in the shooting death of a Kankakee man Friday night, an apparent victim of gang violence.   Kankakee City Police that 46 year old Javier Olivarez was driving a minivan being chased by another vehicle on South Greenwood Ave.  Witnesses tell police when the chase approached Country Club Drive a gunman got out of the car and fired at the minivan which then left the roadway, went through a yard and over turned in the 700 block of Country Club Drive.  Police say they found Olivarez still in the vehicle. He was pronounced dead at the scene. No arrests have yet been made.

SHOPPING TRAFFIC

Bradley Police asking shoppers this holiday season to take an alternative route to Northfield Sq Mall and other nearby stores to pick up your Christmas treasures.    That area of Route 50 could be down to one lane at times.  Use Larry Power, St George or Cardinal Drive as alternates to the mall area.   That off sight crash investigation area will be set up in the mall’s parking lot.

TANKER OVER TURNS

An overturned semi tanker hauling gasoline closed route one south of Route 52 this morning.  Illinois State Police say there was some minor leakage and hazmat teams were called to affect a cleanup.  No word on what caused that accident.  The driver was taken to riverside medical center.  His condition unknown at this hour.
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 22

COPPER THEFT

A Kankakee man returned to his home over the weekend in the 400 block of South Wildwood to find his copper piping had been stolen from the basement and bathrooms of the home.  Police say the thieves put holes in the bathtubs and ripped sinks from the walls to get at the metal.

SHOOTING UPDATE

The Kankakee County Coroners office said Monday that 46 year old Javier Olivarez of Kankakee died of multiple gunshot wounds.    Olivarez was gunned down Saturday night in the 700 block of Country Club Drive.  Police say he was the victim of gang violence.    City police chief Larry Ringee said money, they continue to look for suspects.

BOURBONNAIS MEETING

At last nights Bourbonnais Village Board meeting, trustees approved the tax levy for the fiscal year and it does mean a property tax increase for home owners. .  Bourbonnais Mayor Paul Shore says the increase will be minimal.

KANKAKEE MEETING

At last nights Kankakee City Council meeting alderman extended the time frame for declaring a property a chronic nuisance property from 60 to 90 days.  Kankakee Mayor Nina Epsteen says the extra time will provide for a longer investigative period.   Also last night the council approved special use permits for a senior living center on the Westside and the relocation of the burned out Kankakee Recycling Center to property on Hobbie Ave.

MAN SHOOTS SELF

Alcohol and fire arms don’t mix.  That was proven again over the weekend in Benton County Indiana where Indiana State Police say a man who had been drinking with friends at a home just outside Fowler, accidently shot himself while removing a gun from a zippered case.   The 34 year old victim was taken to a local hospital, treated and released.

JACKSON POLL

The Chicago Sun Times reports that an independent poll of 600 voters in the newly redrawn 2nd Illinois congressional district found that only 35 percent of voters surveyed said they would re elect current congressman Jessie Jackson Jr.   The congressman has suffered from bad press over a house ethics committee investigation on whether he used congressional staff in an effort to be appointed to Barack Obamas senate seat.  Jackson says he expect to be exonerate.   The congressman is facing a democratic primary challenge from former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson.

HOTLINE

Tomorrow is thanksgiving and as is tradition we spoke Tuesday with the home makers at Butterball.    The Butterball helpline is there for all your turkey dilemmas through the holiday season.   Home economist Janice Stahl says they get all kinds of calls at the helpline, many from new brides entertaining the in-laws for the first time.  Janice says her mother in law will be preparing her personal thanksgiving this year while she mans the helpline.    With is 1 800 butterball.

CASA VOLUNTEERS

GUN FOUND

Police arrested a man on a bike after he tried to flee from officers when they tried to speak with him in the 200 block of South Orchard Ave.   A search of 18 year old Margquse Smith turned up a 32 caliber handgun in his pocket.    Smith, an alleged Latin king gang member is facing a number of weapon charges today.

HEROIN ARREST

Kankakee City Police were called to the Washington Ave Shell Station Monday when a  man who was allegedly caught shopping lifting from the store on Sunday  returned again.    A search of the 36 year old Anthony Eldred of Kankakee turned up a hypodermic syringe filled with heroin.  Eldred facing drug charges today.

KMEG ARREST

KAMEG agents last week confiscated 65 baggies of high grade marijuana with a street value of about 6000 dollars.  Police say officers noticed suspicious activity at a vehicle parked in the 500 block of South Chicago and while talking with the driver found that 32 year old jimmy Brown of Kankakee had a revoked driver’s license.  A search of the vehicle followed. Brown is being held on a 75,000 bond.

SALVATION ARMY

Thanksgiving may be tomorrow, but today a free thanksgiving dinner with all the trimmings can be had at the Kankakee Salvation Army.   Todays dinner will be served from noon until 2. 

TRUCKER ID'D

We have an ID now on a truck driver who lost control of his tanker truck Monday morning and overturned on Route 1 south of 52 closing the roadway for about 11 hours.   The trucker was hauling a load of gasoline.  42 year old Todd Eiffert of Decatur suffered minor injuries in the wreck and was ticketed by state police for improper lane usage and failure to use a seatbelt.
FRIDAY NOVEMBER 25

MISSING MAN

Police in Iowa are searching for a former Bourbonnais man who hasn’t been seen since last Sunday.  39 year old David Hesterhoff was on his way to Channahon for business and then Bourbonnais to spend the holidays with family.  Police say the last known location was Monday morning in Waterloo, Iowa.

UNEMPLOYMENT RATE

The unemployment rate in Kankakee County held steady in October at 11.3%.  The Department of Employment Security says that’s down though from 11.8% from a year ago.  The Rockford area has the highest rate.

POLICE HELP

Kankakee City Police are asking for your help in connection with last weeks gang related shooting a 46 year old of Kankakee.  He was shot in his minivan in the 700 block Country Club Drive in what police believe were rival gang members. Call crime stoppers at 93-CRIME.

MORE FUNNY MONEY

Kankakee City Police say more funny money has turned up in the city.  The phony bill was found in the cash register of a business of 300 block of S. Skylar on Tuesday.  No arrests have been made.

CAR/DEER

There was a car/deer accident on Thanksgiving in Iroquois County.  The driver 2500 East and 3100 North was unable to avoid the animal.  The resulting collision reported no injuries.

MONDAY NOVEMBER 28

MAN FOUND

A Bourbonnais man reported missing last week as he made his was from Fort Dodge, Iowa, to Channahon and Bourbonnais to take care of some business and for the thanksgiving holiday, has been found safe and sound.   According to the Daily Journal, police located 39 year old Jason Westerhoff staying in an Iowa motel Friday afternoon.  He hadn't been heard from since the previous Monday.  No word on why he never communicated his intentions to family.

FILING BEGINS

Filing begins today for candidates wishing to run for office in Kankakee County next year.   Independent candidates don’t begin filing until June 18th.

HOME INVASION

Two Kankakee men were arrested over the weekend following a home invasion in the 400 block of South Rosewood.   The intruders, one armed with a handgun, allegedly forced their way into the home Saturday night and struck a male resident in the head several times with the butt of the gun before fleeing.  Under arrest on a charge of home invasion is 18 year old Lavince Kitchans and 19 year old Nelson Williams Jr both of Kankakee.   Williams is also charged with aggravated battery and armed robbery.  Police not yet saying was taken from the home.

HELP NEEDED

Kankakee 5th ward alderman Steve Hunter is calling on the public to step up and assist the investigation into Fridays shooting death of 32 year old Joe Buckner.  Buckner was gunned down Friday in the 600 block of Lincoln Ave.   Hunter says Buckner was a good family and business man and a roll model for the local African American community.  If you have any information that could assist the investigation call crime stoppers at 93 crime.

KAMEG ARREST

An undercover KAMEG investigation last week resulted in the arrest of a Bourbonnais man for the alleged delivery of 17 ecstasy pills.   Police say a later search of 29 year old Demetrius Bostic turned up 12 more pills and 8 bags of crack cocaine.  Bostic being held on 150,000 bail.

WATSEKA TAVERN CALL

Watseka police were called to McSki’s Tavern early Saturday morning for someone creating a disturbance.  Officers ended up arresting 35 year old Angela Raef of Watseka on three counts of aggravated battery and possession of a controlled substance.   No details were released on what caused the disturbance.

SEXUAL ASSAULT

A Kankakee woman who is confined to a wheelchair tells city police she was sexually assaulted by a neighbor over the weekend.   The woman says they had both attended a bingo game in their apartment buildings community room when he wheeled her back to her apartment where the alleged assault took place.  Police are investigating.  No arrests have yet been made.

WATSEKA PARADE

The Watseka Lighted Christmas Parade was held Friday night.  It marked the return of the parade to the downtown area after some complained they were not able to see the floats because a lack of lighting last year.  

ARMED ROBBERY

There was an armed robbery early Saturday in the 400 block of South Washington during which the victim was forced to hand over his cash and ingest 17 ecstasy pills.  The victim says he was near Washington and Hickory when two men approached, pointed a handgun in his face and demanded his wallet before forcing him to take the drugs.   Police are looking for the pair.  The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

HIGHWAY IS READY

Emergency management officials say residents in the Chicago area should gear up for what could be one of the most challenging winters in recent history.  Meteorologists are predicting up to 58 inches of snow for the Chicago area.  When old man winter does arrive.   Kankakee county highway engineer Jim Picarsic says his men and machines are ready for the onslaught. Today is Jim’s last day on the job.  He’s walking off into retirement after 30 years with the county.  We wish him well.

COUNTY CUTS

The Daily Journal reports that the Kankakee County Board Tuesday cut financial assistance to local veterans in half.   At the board yesterday held a special meeting to approve special the 2012 fiscal year budget.  According to the paper the budget for the Veteran’s Assistance Commission was slashed from 222 thousand to 123,000 dollars. 

KAMEG ARREST

After receiving a complaint about illicit drug sales, KAMEG agents and the Bradley Police Department conducted a joint investigation at a tavern in the 100 block of North Kinzie Ave.  The outcome resulted in the arrest of a Kankakee man who was allegedly soliciting bar patrons in an attempt to sell cocaine and marijuana.   Arrested on drug charges was 26 year old Santos Salgado.

MURDER ARRESTS

Kankakee City Police have made two arrests in connection with last weeks shooting death of 32 year old Joe Buckner.  Buckner was gunned down in front of his home in the 600 block of South Lincoln Friday night.  City police say it appears that robbery was the motive.  Facing a charge of armed robbery and murder are 19 year old Dannie Kendrick and his cousin 19 year old Ricky Kendrick both of Kankakee.

FOOD DRIVE

As you head out to do your grocery shopping this holiday season don’t forget to pick up a non perishable or two for a salvation army food barrel.    Major Jerry O’Neil says their annual food drive provide a great meals all year long for those in need.   Salvation Army food barrels are in place throughout the area through the holiday season.  

EMS MEETING

State Rep. Lisa Dugan, will be joined by co-chair Rep. Don Moffitt of Galesburg and other members of the General Assembly Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Task Force as she hosts a regional hearing for EMS personnel and organizations; today at the Kankakee Public Library.   Dugan says the state is looking for a way to make it easier for them to do their job.  Dugan says financial constraints are the most pressing problem for local EMS departments.  Todays meeting is not open to the general public.

SCHOOL MAYBE CLOSING

The possibility of closing Reddick Grade School was one of the option discussed at a meeting last night of the Herscher School District 2 board of education.  The move could help close a huge budget deficit.    Decman says the district is also considering a referendum to help ease their budget difficulties.   All of this is still just in the discussion stages.  

RIVERSIDE DONATIONS

The Riverside Medical Center scores for schools program has wrapped up another year.  Every time a local varsity high school football team scored a touchdown on their home field, Riverside donated 25 dollars to the school.   Momence High received the most money this year at 750 dollars.  St Anne high School, who does not have a football team receives 10 dollars for every varsity soccer goal scored at home. 
TUESDAY NOVEMBER 29

BRADLEY MEETING

At last night Bradley Village Board meeting, trustees once again tabled the controversial rental and multi family unit inspection ordinance.  Bradley Mayor Bruce Adams says its not ready yet.

COMMITTEE MEETING

At a special meeting last night of the Kankakee Planning and Building Safety Committee, the committee voted to approve the much discussed residential rental license and inspection ordinance which includes a 60 dollar bi-annual fee.  The measure now heads to the full city council for their approval on December 19th.

COUNTY BOARD MEETING

There’s a special meeting of the Kankakee County Board planned for this morning.   It’s expected the board will approved the budget for the next fiscal year.  

ARRESTS

Two Mississippi men have been arrested by Illinois State Police after their vehicle was clocked at 100 miles per hour on I57 near Buckley.  The driver, 22 year old Donovan Robinson was arrested for driving on a suspended license.  His passenger, 27 year old Nathan Cole was taken into custody on drug and weapon charges after a search found two baggies of marijuana on a loaded 40 caliber smith and Wesson in his possession. 

KAMEG ARREST

KAMEG agents raided a home in the 400 block of North Washington on Sunday and seized close to 6 ounces of cocaine and 247 grams of marijuana along with a loaded semi automatic handgun and ammo.   Police say the drugs have an estimated street value of about 9000 dollars.  Arrested was 31 year old Donato Perez of Kankakee.

At last nights Bradley Village Board meeting trustees on second reading denied the proposed Northfield Meadows development.  Mike Smith, chairman of the zoning and planning committee says variances were the problem.
FRIDAY DECEMBER 2

MAN ARRESTED

Bourbonnais Police have arrested the father of a 2 year old girl who was found unresponsive at her home on Oct. 26th on murder charges.  17 year old Taverias Rattford was arrested Thursday in connection of the death of Michelle Rattford.  The coroners office reported the child died from blunt force trauma to the head.

BOND IS SET

Bond has been set for one of two Kankakee men charged with the shooting death of Joe Buckner of Kankakee.   Buckner was gunned down near his home in the 600 block of S. Lincoln Friday night when what appears to be a robbery gone wrong.  Bond was set at a million dollars Wednesday for 19 year old Danny Kendrick Jr and 19 year old Ricky Kendrick Jr was also implicated in the shooting.

JACKSON

The Chicago Tribune has reported the House Ethics Committee will make a statement about the investigation on Congressman Jesse Jackson Jr on how he acted improperly about seeking the appointment to fill the seat that was vacated by President Obama.  Illinois prosecutors have said that former Gov. Blagojevich tried to give Jackson the seat in exchange for a $1.5 million dollar campaign donation.
MONDAY DECEMBER 5

MAN IS HELD

A Bourbonnais man is being held for the Oct. death of his 2 year old daughter.  He’ll make his first court appearance today in Kankakee County Court.  The 17 year old was arrested last week.  The Kankakee County Coroners Office said last week that an autopsy found that the girl died from a blunt force to her head on Oct. 26.

FUNERAL ATTENDANCE

Several hundred people attended the weekend of funeral services for 32 year old Joe Buckner of Kankakee.  Buckner was gunned down Nov. 25th in the 600 block of S. Lincoln; an apparent robbery gone bad.  2 cousins, Danny and Ricky Kendrick both of Kankakee and both 19 years old are being held on a million dollars bond each in conjunction with the murder.

ETHICS COMMITTEE

The House Ethics Committee announced Friday it will continue its investigation of allegations that Jesse Jackson Jr. or someone acting on his behalf offered to raise campaign cash for then Gov. Blagojevich in exchange for a senate appointment in 2008. 

BURGLARY ARREST

Kankakee City Police arrested 2 men over the weekend after being called to a home in the 300 block of S. Wall Street for a report of a burglary in progress.   Authorities say a witness spotted the pair and called the police.

COURT ST. CLOSED

An engine blew on a semi Friday on Court St. the resulting smoke closed Court St. at 700 East until the fire was out and visibility improved.  The Daily Journal reports the truck was hauling boxes to Momence.  A 35 year old Pekin man was not hurt.
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 8

ACCIDENT

A Danville woman escaped injury Monday when she lost control of her vehicle on 1650 East near 400 north in Iroquois County.  Police say 65 year old Marilyn Bacys lost control on loose gravel and rolled the vehicle into and out of a ditch.  No citations were issued.

CAR DEER ACCIDENT

There was another car deer accident Monday in Iroquois County.  The third in the past few days.  44 year old Charlene Neukomm of Cissna Park encountered the animal in the roadway on 2000 East near 1200 North.   No one was hurt.

BOURBONNAIS MEETING

The tax levy was subject number one at last nights Bourbonnais Village Board meeting.   The board approved an increase to cover increased cost to the village.   

INDICTMENT

A Kankakee county grand jury has indicted a man for a shooting and armed robbery in October of this year in the 900 block of Wildwood.  Police say 22 year old Tracy Bowling of Kankakee is charged with attempted robbery, aggravated battery with a firearm and more after allegedly robbing and shooting a man.

TAX INCREASE

A new income tax increase took effect in Jasper County December 1st.   Combined with the states 3.4 percent income tax rate, Jasper County resident are now paying 6.14 percent in state and local income taxes.  That’s the second highest combined rate in the Indiana.  Only Pulaski County has a higher rate.

K3 MEETING

The family of Joe Buckner made an appearance at last nights Kankakee City Council meeting.  The 32 year old Buckner was gunned down in front of his home in the 600 block of South Lincoln allegedly by two men in what’s believed to be a robbery gone bad.  The family was there to ask for better lighting in their neighborhood.  Believing that the would be robbers may have been scared off if lighting had been better.     Kankakee Mayor Nina Epsteen says it was an emotional night.

STABBING

No details on this yet, but we understand a man may have been stabbed in the chest, possible with a pocket knife, by his father last night.   Apparently some kind of domestic dispute erupted at a home in the 1900 hundred block of Spruce Street.  We’ll have more details when they become available.
TUESDAY DECEMBER 13

AMMO FOUND

A Kankakee woman, who was cleaning out a home she had just purchased in the 700 block of Francine Drive, called Kankakee Police Monday when she came across a brown bag containing ammunition.    The woman had police take the bag for disposal. 

NO VOTE

The Illinois House on Monday passed a package of tax breaks for CME Group Inc and Sears Holdings Corp, sending the measure to the Senate for a final vote. The legislation would give the CME an $85 million tax break from the state of Illinois, as lawmakers seek to keep the biggest U.S. futures exchange operator from leaving Chicago, its long-time home.  The bill, which was passed in an 81-28 vote, also extends a $15 million yearly tax break to retail company Sears. The Illinois Senate, which passed similar legislation earlier this year, is due to consider the bill on Tuesday. Illinois Governor Pat Quinn has said he would sign the bill into law if it passes both bodies.  CME, which employs 2,000 people in the state, and Sears, which employs about 6,000, had threatened to leave Illinois after the cash-strapped state in January raised corporate tax rates to 7 percent from 4.8 percent, along with individual rates.  State Representative Jason Barickman voted against the measure. AND SAYS THE The state should not be cherry picking winners and losers when it comes to our businesses.

BRADLEY MEETING

At last nights Bradley Village Board meeting, Mayor Bruce Adams said the village is considering putting a measure up for a vote in March that would allow residents to purchase electricity from suppliers other than Com Ed.  Makes sense to offer the public another option.  Adams says if the measure gets on the ballot and is approved by voters, the savings to the average homeowner could be substantial.  Adams says the village already purchases electricity from alternative sources and approval of the proposed measure would give residents and businesses the same option.  Alternatives have meant savings for the village.

CAR DEER

There was another car deer accident in Iroquois County Monday.  52 year old Larry Jordan of Clifton was eastbound on 3100 North near 500 East when he was unable to avoid the deer.  No one was hurt.

NATURAL CAUSES

The Daily Journal reports that a man who collapsed Sunday at the Chebanse Depot while the Santa train was making it’s yearly visit, died of natural causes.   The Kankakee County Coroners office says that 72 year old John Cantillion had a history of heart issues.

COPPER THEFT

There been another copper theft in Kankakee.  This one in the 600 block of South Elm Street.    The home owner says sometime in the last week thieves took off with about 90  feet of new copper piping along with four copper shutoff valves. 

CRASH 157

A drunk driver, traveling southbound in the northbound lanes of I57 in Bradley Monday morning sideswiped a vehicle towing a trailer.     Illinois State Police say after the collision, 47 year old Michael Wackowiak of Mokena crossed the center median and the southbound lanes of the roadway before coming to rest in a ditch.  Wackowiak was taken to St Marys for treatment and is facing a number of charges today including dui.   The driver and four passengers in the other vehicle were not injured.  The accident closed the expressway for a time.

STEGER PLEA

A Steger man, facing a number of charges including solicitation of murder was in Cook County Court Monday.  45 year old Robert Deja plead not guilty to allegedly trying to hire his brother to kill his adopted daughter.   Prosecutors say Deja fathered a baby by the girl when she was just 17 and tried to have her killed when he discovered that she was pregnant again, possible by her boyfriend.  According to the Northwest Indiana Times, the plan was also to kill the girls boyfriend.
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 14

INDICTMENT

A Kankakee man has been indicted by a Kankakee County Grand Jury for allegedly being in possession of a stolen vehicle.  22 year old Ervin Campbell was arrested last month after officers found him in a vehicle reported stolen from the 600 block of West Station St. in Kankakee.

THEFT RING

Police in Indiana have arrested two men in connection with a retail theft operation targeting the Wal-Mart in Rensselaer.  According to police 21 year old Ron Spizzirri of Brook and 56 year old Dan Miller of Valparaiso are reportedly part of a group of people who would shoplift from the retailer then return to the store, or have someone else exchange the items for a gift card.   Preferably a Visa gift card that can be used anywhere.  Both men are facing multiple charges.

EXPLOSION PLANNED

Residents in Lowell can expect to hear an explosion today.   A demolition team will set charges and topple some large tanks at the now shuttered Rieter Plant on West Oakley Ave.  The plant closed in 2010 putting about 400 people out of work.  The towers are coming down to make room for a refrigerated warehouse is going up at the site.

STOLEN BED SHEETS

Kankakee City Police are investigating a burglary this week in the 500 block of North Indiana.   The thieves entered the home by breaking a window.  Missing from the home are bed sheets and cologne.    All the bed sheets from all the bedrooms reported taken.

BRADLEY SCHOOL SHOPPING

Bradley administration, fire and police officials went Christmas shopping Tuesday with students from Bradley Elementary School District 61.   The annual outing to benefit the needy took place this year at the Bradley Wal-Mart.   Bradley Police Chief Steve Coy the chief says at least 60 kids will benefit from the items purchased Tuesday.

BOARD MEETING

At Tuesdays Kankakee County Board meeting, the board approved a 16.7 million dollar tax levy to support county operations for the next year.  That’s less than a three percent increase from the previous year.     Also yesterday board chairman Mike Bossert had a proposal to eliminate the office of auditor removed from the agenda.  Bossert says the issue has become too political.

At Tuesdays Iroquois County Board meeting, John Shure of Buckley was sworn in to fill the seat left open when Keith McTagert resigned in July.  Shure was appointed to the post by outgoing chairman Ron Shroader.  Shroader leaving the board after 24 years, 10 as chairman.
THURSDAY DECEMBER 15

BAD PARKING

One really sloppy parking job landed a Watseka man in trouble this week.  Police came across the vehicle of 27 year old William Angle vehicle on walnut near Kay Street, parked partially in the roadway and partially on the sidewalk.  He was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol and drugs and for possession of drug paraphernalia.  Angle was also charged with driving on a sidewalk. 

COUNSELOR GUILTY

A man who served as a summer counselor at a Kankakee, 4-H camp has been ordered to serve 20 years in federal prison for child pornography offenses.    In Federal Courft In Urbana Wednesday Judge Michael McCuskey also ordered 28-year-old Adam Fritz to pay $12,000 in restitution to identified victims and remain on supervised release for the rest of his life after his prison sentence.      Fritz pleaded guilty in August to charges of advertising, possessing and distributing child pornography.      Federal prosecutors say authorities seized more than 13,000 images and more than 900 video files of child porn from Fritz's property.   Fritz had been a counselor at Camp ShawWawNasSee in Kankakee since 2000. He was arrested in November 2009.

HOME INVASION PLEA

An Urbana man could get up to 30 years in prison after pleading guilty to home invasion in ford county court this week.  According to the News Gazette,  52 year old Dan Cobb entered the home of a Paxton couple on Easter Sunday wearing a ski mask and armed with two knives in an attempt to steal a guitar he knew the couple owned.   Jim and Dede Wood were able to wrestle Cobb to the floor and hold him for police.   The Cobbs are co pastors at the Vineyard Church of Paxton.

ILLIANA

The committee charged with deciding on a route for the proposed Illinna Expressway linking I65 in Indiana with I57 and i55 in Illinois held an open house at a Matteson hotel last night.    As of right now there area eight proposed routes for the roadway.  You could make it number nine.   IDOT spokesman Steve Sholte says you can design a route at their website and send it in.  Go to illianacorridor.org if you’d like to submit a route for the Illiana.    Former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson was in the crowd last night.   While in congress, Halvorson was instrumental at kick starting the project.   Halvroson says building the project as a private public partnership is the only way the roadway will get off the ground in this economy.

IRO ACCIDENT

An accident in Concord Township Wednesday sent a Sheldon man to Carle Hospital Urbana for treatment.   Police say 71 year old Doris Bitzel of rural Sheldon was on 2820 East when her vehicle collided with another at the intersection of 1950 North.  Both Bitzel and 38 year old David Muehling of Sheldon were hospitalized with Muehling being transferred to Carle Hospital in Urbana.

KAMEG ARREST

KAMEG agents arrested a Kankakee woman this week after she allegedly delivered 1.2 grams of crack cocaine to undercover agnates in the 700 block of West Park Drive.  Facing drug charges today is 22 year old Monique Taylor.

FREEDOM FAILS

A Wilmington woman’s bid for a new trial, based partly on the fact that the children of the judge hearing the case were Facebook friends with relatives of the victim, failed in Will County Court Wednesday.  According to the Chicago Sun Times, the judge making the ruling told attorneys for 40 year old Kelly Klein that a ruling in Kleins favor would mean judges all over the state would need to scour their own and family members Facebook pages before every bench trial.  Klein was arrested in 2007 after a baby at her home day care business was hospitalized with bleeding in the brain.  Klein said the 7 month old boy fell and hit his head.
FRIDAY DECEMBER 16

BURGLARY

While a Kankakee man showered Thursday in an apartment in the 400 block of Greenwood, thieves were in a bedroom stealing a laptop computer.  The victim tells police he heard voices coming from the room but by the time he toweled off they had fled with the electronics and a pack of smokes.

CHURCH COLLAPSE

No word today on why part of the roof of the greater Christ Temple Ministry Church in Bradley collapsed in on itself Wednesday.   The church is located 120 North Monroe Ave.   Church officials are bringing in a structural engineer to determine what went wrong.   No one was hurt, but the Daily Journal says the collapse did cause a minor natural gas leak.

FATAL ACCIDENT

A rural Sibley woman was killed in an accident near Gibson City on Wednesday of this week.  Ford County Sheriffs Police say 59 year old Kathy Thompson was killed when her SUV left the roadway, sheared off a utility pole and rolled into a cornfield.   The accident occurred at 970 North and 500 East.

FIRE

Kankakee Fire called to the 1000 block of East Oak Street in Kankakee last night for a kitchen fir.   No one was hurt.  Two adults and a teenager were forced from their home by the fire that did about 5000 dollars in damage to kitchen area.   The family is being care for by the Red Cross.   The cause of the blaze is still under investigation. 

FLOOD WATCHES

The National Weather Service has issued a flood warning for the Kankakee River at Shelby and a flood advisory for the Kankakee at Momence.  Flood advisories are also up for the Iroquois River near Forseman and at Iroquois. 

INDICTMENT

An alleged Kankakee heroin dealer has been indicted by a Kankakee County Grand Jury.   34 year old Quantel Riley was arrested in November after police say he delivered and unspecified quantity of heroin to KAMEG agents.   Police say a later search of Riley’s home turned up more suspected heroin.

PASSAGES

SURGICAL CENTER

The new surgical suites at Riverside Medical Centers recently completed east tower opened for business this week.  Allen Kelly, vice president of ancillary services at Riverside, says the new suits are state of the art.  As of Monday, Riverside Medical Center now has 30 percent more surgical capacity than the old building.

LOWELL COUPLE

A rural LOWELL Indiana couple together face 16 felony charges after the woman's son told police he ran away from home to escape beatings, nights in a dog kennel and threats with knives and a gun.  Forty-year-old Tina Louise Graham and 55-year-old Vernon Widner ARE CHARGED WITH criminal confinement, intimidation, battery, neglect of a dependent and strangulation. Widner was being held on $70,000 bond, Graham was released on a $5,000 cash bond.    The Merrillville Post-Tribune and the Times of Munster reported the boy now in foster care told police he was locked in a dog kennel overnight from October 2010 through January 2011.

SALVATION ARMY

The Kankakee County chapter of the Salvation Army will through open their doors Saturday to accept last minute toy and food donations to help needy area families during the holidays.   O’Neil says the number of families needing Salvation Army help during the holidays increased this year.  Call 933-8421 for more information.
MONDAY DECEMBER 19

WATSEKA FIRE

Damage is estimated at 50,000 dollars from a fire Sunday in the 700 block of Rose Wood in Watseka. Watseka fire says a neighbor spotted smoke coming from the garage of the home and alerted the family who all managed to escape ok.  Officials say the cause appears to be ashes from wood burning stove that had been put in a container sitting to close to the outside of the garage.  Damage was limited to the garage, attic and kitchen of the home.

BELMONT ACCIDENT

An accident Saturday night at 2500 East and 1400 North in Belmont Township sent two people to the hospital.  Iroquois County Sheriffs Police say 20 year old Amber Klemz lost control of her vehicle, skidded across the roadway, through a ditch went airborne and struck an embankment head on before rolling onto its top.   Both Klemz and 20 year old Charlene Hofmeyter of Watseka were hospitalized with non life threatening injuries.

EMINGTON KILLINGS

That was Livingston County Coroner Michael Burke Saturday as he identified the four victims of Fridays murder suicide in Emington.  Unofficially you can add the name of 30 year old Sara McMeen to the list of the dead.  A neighbor tells the associated press that she heard a round of shots Friday afternoon and ran outside to her backyard only to see McMeen in the next yard, hovering over her baby, before firing a shot at the infant.  It's believed McMeen took her own life a few minutes later.  Livingston County Sheriffs Police have not yet given their official account of the killings.

TRUCKER FOUND

A Mount Prospect Illinois trucker was found dead inside his cab Friday morning at the one earth energy ethanol plant in Gibson City.  The Ford County Coroners office say the man was found unresponsive in the sleeping compartment of the semi.  Foul play is not suspected.  The plant often allows truckers to use their parking lot to get some rest.

DONATIONS ACCEPTED

While officials of the greater Christ Temple Ministry Church in Bradley wait for word on what caused part of the building’s roof to collapse last week, a fund raising campaign to repair the damage got underway over the weekend.  The Daily Journal reports that a bank account for donations has been set up at Centrue Bank.  No one was injured in the incident which is still under investigation.

LOST DRUNK DRIVER

Illinois State Police District 21 Communications received a unique call for assistance over the weekend. 42 year old Dante Owens of Lynwood called the state police and advised them that he was out of gas and had no idea where he was. When the dispatcher attempted to get more information about Owens' location he stated that he could not remember where he started driving from or where he was trying to go. During the conversation, Owens admitted that he had been drinking. A state trooper arrived at Route 17 and 7000 west road after Owens' cell phone signal helped provide his location. Owens failed a field sobriety tests and was placed under arrest for Driving Under the Influence.

TOY DRIVE RESULTS

State Rep Lisa Dugan says over 1800 families will be the beneficiary of the many toys and gift cards collected during this years 22nd annual toy drive.  Dugan along with the Salvation Army and Toys for Tots collected over 2200 toys for area kids to open Christmas morning.
TUESDAY DECEMBER 20

SEWER RATES

It appears that sewer rates will be going up in Bourbonnais in 2012.    At last nights village board meeting the board heard the results of a study that showed Bourbonnais currently with the lowest rates of any are municipality and recommended an increase from 21.50 a month to 26.75.  Bourbonnais Mayor Paul Shore says the increase will cover higher costs due to the karma plant refurbishment and should held to nagging flooding problems in the village.

CHILD NEGLECT

A Kankakee woman is in trouble today after allegedly leaving her two year old son alone in a hotel room in Kankakee early Tuesday morning.  An employee first heard the child crying for his mother then found the youngster on the balcony outside his room in 37 degree temperatures, dressed only in a t shirt and diaper.   The mother returned about an hour later and was arrested.   Facing charges of child neglect is 20 year old Fatima Scott of Kankakee.  The boy was placed in the care of DCFS.

FAKE 50

Police are looking for a man who tried to pass a fake 50 dollar bill at a drug store in the 200 block of West Court Street in Kankakee Monday.    Employees say when the man was told the bill was counterfeit he fled on foot.

K3 MEETING

At last nights Kankakee City Council meeting, alderman approved on first reading the controversial rental inspection ordinance.  However some alderman were not pleased with the current version and you can expect changes in the measure before it comes up next month for a final vote.   Some to the cost are expected to be tweaked by then.   Alderman Steve Hunter.  Also last night the City Council approved the 13.6 million dollar tax levy which includes a two percent increase to cover the cost of pension payments that must be made.  Mayor Nina Epsteen says the city is paying for sins of the past.  Also last night alderman discussed possible ways to raise revenue in advance of an expected 1.3 million dollar budget shortfall in the next fiscal year.  Some of those possibilities include bringing back the cops fee, vehicle stickers and possibly a gas tax.  It’s all still just in the discussion phase.
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 21

EMINGTON UPDATE

Authorities say they may never know why a woman in a rural Illinois town shot each of her three children and her
live-in boyfriend before killing herself.  The chief deputy sheriff of Livingston County southwest of Chicago tells The Associated Press that the investigation "has kind of stalled right now" in a Friday murder-suicide in rural Emington. Investigators say they know 30-year-old Sara McMeen killed her boyfriend and three children with a semi-automatic handgun.  But Marvin Rutledge says he's not sure authorities will ever
know why and they can't ask McMeen what happened that day because she's "not here."  Investigators plan to talk to more family members and friends after funerals this week.
All three children were found in the family's backyard with
gunshot wounds in the head.

GOODLAND WATER

Goodland Indiana officials say in the Newton County Enterprise that they expect to have a new water tower up and operating next spring.   The old water tower collapsed November 7th spewing 250,000 gallons of water on parts of the town damaging a few homes.  No one was hurt.   Officials says insurance and grant money should cover the all replacement costs.   No word yet on what caused the tower to come down.

KETTLES DOWN

With just a few days left before Christmas, the Kankakee chapter of the Salvation Army says kettle collections are down this year.   Major Jerry O’Neil hopes you give what you can in the next few days.  Salvation Army kettles are stationed all over the Kankakee area.

There was a shooting in Milford Tuesday afternoon.  Iroquois County Sheriffs Police only saying today that a 30 year old man suffered a gunshot wound to the leg and was taken to Iroquois Memorial Hospital for treatment.  The investigation continues.  We’ll have more when it becomes available.

TRAPPED HUNTERS

Two south suburban hunters are ok today after being trapped on a small island in the middle of the Kankakee River.   The two had crossed a shallow portion of the river early Monday morning to hunt for water foul, but found the river had risen by the time they were ready to leave.  Unable to get across, the two men built a fire and waited for help to arrive.  Meanwhile their families were calling authorities for help in located the men.   Department of Natural Resources officials found their vehicle in a parking lot near hunting area 7 and the two men were rescued by boat a short time later.    The two had a cell phone with them but it got wet and was inoperable.  And neither man bother to tell anyone exactly where they were going.    Officials determined they had gone to the Kankakee River State Park after checking one of the men’s computers for recent internet searches.
THURSDAY DECEMBER 22

ARMED ROBBERY

There was an armed robbery Wednesday in the 500 block of South Chicago Ave.  The victim tells city police a man approached him from behind and put a gun to his head.  A struggle between to two erupted with victim eventually gaining control of the weapon.   However, the thief was able to grab the victim’s cell phone before fleeing.  The weapon turned out to be a bb gun.  Police are looking for the guy. 

FATAL

The Kankakee County Coroners office says a Joliet man drowned to death as a result of a single vehicle accident Wednesday morning on I57 in Bourbonnais.   Illinois State Police say 27 year old Michael Simms lost control of his vehicle, left the roadway and ended up overturned in water fill ditch.  Simms was pronounced dead at the scene.   The crash tied up traffic on that stretch of the expressway into the early afternoon.

FIRE

Damage is estimated at 100,000 dollar from house fire this morning in the 600 block of South Harrison.  Kankakee fire reporting extensive damage to the back porch and kitchen of the two story home with significant smoke and water damage throughout the entire structure.  The two elderly residents are being cared for by relatives.   One injury reported.  A fire fighter was hurt when he slipped down the basement stairs.   The cause is still under investigation.

PEOTONE AIRPORT

The proposed south suburban airport at Peotone took a small step forward this month when FAA  informed the Illinois Department of Transportation, Division of Aeronautics, that it has approved the Existing Conditions Report for the Airport’s Master Plan. The SSA Existing Conditions Report provides an inventory of the current regional setting and land use patterns that surround the Inaugural Airport.  The report identifies the social, economic and environmental characteristics of the area, including population levels, employment trends, and the current transportation network. It also documents local resources that may be affected by the airport like schools, churches and parks in the area.

Authorities in the Village of Buckley telling us today that a boil order issued earlier this week has now been canceled.  Its once again safe to drink the tap water in Buckley.

KINZINGER TO MARRY

Sorry ladies, congressman Adam Kinzinger is off the market.  Kinzinger Wednesday announced that he is engaged to be married.   His intended is longtime girlfriend Riki Meyers.  The two met while in both were in flight school.    No date has been set yet. 

SUPPORTIVE LIVING

The Daily Journal reports that construction could begin as early as this spring on a 76 apartment supportive living facility in Bourbonnais.  The housing would serve adults between the ages of 22 and 64 with physical disabilities.   Liberty Oaks was one of five supportive living facilities across the state approved Monday by the Illinois Department of Healthcare and Family Services.
FRIDAY DECEMBER 23

PLAYER DIES

The Daily Journal reports that a Joliet man who died in a single vehicle accident this week on I57 in Bourbonnais, played with the Kankakee County Soldiers semi pro basketball team.   27 year old Mike Simms was with the team during the 2010-2011 season.    Simms drowned when his car left the roadway and plunged into a water filled ditch Wednesday. 

HOME INVASION

A Kankakee man has been indicted by a Kankakee County grand jury on two counts of home invasion and armed robbery.  Police alleged that on the night of November 26th, armed with a handgun, 17 year old Lavince Kitchens entered a home in the 400 block of South Rosewood in Kankakee.  Struck a victim and robbed the place.

KAMEG ARREST

KAMEG agents raided a home in the 1300 block of East Chestnut Street earlier this week and came away with a stash of drugs.  Four grams of cocaine and a small amount of marijuana were found in the home of 38 year old Brandell Coleman.  Coleman facing an assortment of drug charges today.

MURDER INDICTMENTS

A Kankakee County grand jury has returned murder indictments against three men in two separate killings.   19 year old cousins, Dannie and Ricky Kendrick are charged with two counts of murder in the November shooting death of 32 year old Joe Buckner the 3rd of Kankakee.  Police believe Buckner was gunned down in the 600 block of South Lincoln Ave. In a robbery gone bad.  Also indicted on murder charges is 17 year old Tavarius Radford of Bourbonnais.  Radford is accused in the death of his 2 year old daughter at their home in the 200 block of North Stadium Drive.

WEAPONS ARREST

A Kankakee man has been arrested on weapons charges after he was found to allegedly be in possession of a loaded semi automatic handgun with an obliterated serial number.  Taken into custody by KAMEG agents earlier this week was 19 year old Tyray Brown of Kankakee.

JOBLESS NUMBERS

The latest jobless numbers in Kankakee County are looking up.  The Illinois Department of Employment Security puts the November unemployment rate at 10.8 percent.  That’s well off the 11.3 October figure and down from the 11.8 of a year ago.  Bloomington Normal has the lowest jobless rate in the state.  Rockford the highest.

TUESDAY DECEMBER 27

ACCIDENT

Two people were hospitalized Monday following an accident in Sheldon Township.  Police say 49 year old Ronald Rudisill of Sheldon was eastbound on 1800 North and drifted into the westbound lane to make a turn.   Meanwhile a vehicle driven by 97 year old Mervin Terrell of Kentland Indiana was westbound on 1800 approaching the same location.  The two drivers couldn’t see each other because of a hill crest.  The resulting collision sent Terrell and a passenger to Iroquois Memorial for treatment.  Their condition is unknown.

CARJACKING

Kankakee City Police are investigating a carjacking last night at Court and Greenwood.   A man who implied he had a gun, grabbed the vehicle and took off.   No one was hurt.  Police are looking for the carjacker and the vehicle.

FIRE

Kankakee Fire called to the 400 block of South Poplar over the long holiday weekend for a house fire.    The home that was undergoing rehab sustained some 30,000 dollars in damage.  Nobody was hurt.   The cause is still under investigation.

LOTTO WINNER

Someone who purchased a ticket for the Christmas eve drawing of little lotto ticket at the East Side Court Grocery Store in Kankakee is 100,000 dollars richer.  The winning numbers were 6, 16, 20, 26, 29.  No winner has yet to come forward.

HOOPESTON BAND ON THE ROAD

The Hoopeston High School marching band will spend New Year’s Eve in Memphis.  The band will perform during halftime at the AutoZone Liberty Bowl in Memphis.  They leave today and will return on Sunday.

LOWELL MIGHT TRY AGAIN

Officials in Lowell Indiana today will decide if explosives should be used in a second try at bringing down the one remaining tower at the former Rieter Automotive Plant on Oakley Ave.   The Post Tribune reports that a first attempt in December ended with a partial explosion and metal shrapnel flying through the air, nearly striking several onlookers and breaking the windshield of an ambulance.

WATSEKA CONTRACT

Contract talks between police union negotiators and Watseka officials will most likely go to arbitration now that the city council has rejected a proposed agreement.  Watseka Mayor Bob Hardwood says he disagrees with the council’s decision.  Police have been without a contract since April.
WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 28

ARSON

A car fire Christmas Eve on South Gordoan Ave in Kankakee has been ruled arson.  A witness tells police he saw two men leaving the scene of the fire just before the blaze erupted laughing as they fled on foot.

BRADLEY MEETING

At last nights Bradley Village Board meeting the board again tabled the rental inspection fee ordinance because of internal administrative matters, but trustees did approve the placement of a referendum on the March ballot to allow Bradley residents and business to purchase electricity from providers other than ComEd.  Bradley Mayor Bruce Adams says it’s a good thing.  Also last night the board got an update on the still to come transfer station at the west end of Broadway.  Metro board trustee Nick Allen says the project is still in the engineering and approval, but when finished it’ll be a nice addition to the village.

CONGRESSIONAL RACES

Voters in the March primary election will have two democrats and two republicans to choose from in the 2nd congressional district.   According to the Illinois State Board of Elections, the congressional filing period ended Tuesday with congressman Jesse Jackson Jr and former congresswoman Debbie Halvorson on the democratic ballot and Kankakee City News Publisher James Taylor Sr and dr. Brian Woodworth of Bourbonnais on the republican ballot.   Woodworth is an associate professor at Olivet Nazarene University.   In the 16th congressional district that encompasses Iroquois County then heads northwest to the Wisconsin state line, current congressmen Adam Kinzinger and Don Manzullo will battle it out.    There are no democratic challengers.

PEOTONE TALKS

Crians Chicago Business is reporting that Congressman Jessie Jackson Jr and aids to Governor Pat Quinn held a meeting about the proposed airport at Peotone last week at Chicago’s Thompson Center.   According to Crains, the governors people say there was some progress made.  Jacksons people are more skeptical. 

XMAS BURGLARY

City police are investigating a burglary that occurred Christmas Day.   A flat screen TV, laptop computer digital camera and an mp3 player were taken from a home in the 1900 block of East Spruce Street.

COPPER CAPER

A woman who noticed a neighbor’s window air conditioner on the ground brought police to the 800 block of South Elm Street Thursday.   The home is vacant, but police say a search of the place turned up missing copper piping in the basement. 

URNS STOLEN

Kankakee City Police are looking for whoever it was that took two dark green metal urns weighing in at two to four hundred pounds from a family grave site at Mt Calvery Cemetery.  The two urns, which were bolted down, were reported missing over the holiday weekend.  Before being moved to the cemetery the urns were a longtime fixture in front of the family’s home at Indiana and Oak in Kankakee.

KINZINGER

Congressman Adam Kinzinger was in Bourbonnais Wednesday.  Kinzinger was in the area to speak with employers.  The congressman is seeking out ideas from small business owners in his district on what action Washington must take in order for their business to be able to create one more job.

XMAS TREES

When its time to dispose of your now not so fresh Christmas tree, Bourbonnais Public Works reminding you that residents should take those trees to the closest public park for mulching.  

CO-ED WRESTLING

This year the wrestling team at South Newton High School is co-ed.  Freshman Michela Rieck made the team this year after wrestling in girls competitions since the 5th grade.  And yes she does wrestle the boys, though some have elected to forfeit the match.   Michela was also homecoming freshman princess this year.
